Christmas bazaar in Bishkek

013.12.2022  10:33

On Saturday, December 10th, 2022 our Bishkek team participated in a winter fair organized by the German embassy. WPU Erayim had a diverse and colorful winter fair stand offering products of women's self-help groups from across the republic.

In our offer, there were products of female-operated small businesses, like honey produced by SHG Datkaiym from Mady rural district, sparkling mineral water produced by «Iygilik» self-help group from Kok-Oi village of Chaek district in the Naryn region, apples, pears, kurma and rice grown by SHG members from Jalal-Abad, Issyk-Kul, Osh regions and many more. We also provided opportunities to other female groups and individuals to generate income from sales and gain experience in the marketing of their handicrafts. Among those, there were Altynai's knitted colorful houseshoes, Aisha Eje's woollen headwear, and traditional clothes sewn by members of the SHGs. There were unique products like a handmade book for small children of «Aikol» Maternal School educators from Bazar-Korgon, diverse bags, and traditional female head decorations as well as dried fruit, traditional dried salty cheese balls called kurut, and many others. Sind it was a traditional Christmas market, it goes without saying that we manufactured plenty of colorfully decorated Christmas cookies. The baking efforts included several volunteers, who spend hours and hours making the dough and cutting out vanilla and shortbread cookies as well as gingerbread.

The event took place in the yard of the German restaurant Steinbräu in downtown Bishkek. Traditionally there were many stands, tents, and wooden market stalls, where a variety of food, drinks, and handicrafts were sold. Plenty of visitors came over to buy their Christmas presents from local vendors and artists as well as support the local NGOs, who - like Erayim - promoted their activities. It was our first experience with a Christmas market and such form of PR. We have learned a lot, we enjoyed numerous talks with the visitors and spend a good time as a team - unfortunately in a very cold, but happily very joyful atmosphere.

Many thanks to all the volunteers: Sarah, Ewa, Iga, and Liliya, for the cookie-baking efforts, Liliya for designing our beautiful etiquettes, and Tahmina and Maksat for their help on the market. To all the visitors: thank you for your time, and supporting women entrepreneurs across the Kyrgyz Republic and the work of Erayim.
