Self-Help Groups are one of the main components of the project of the WPU Erayim ‘The Introduction of a Combination of Modern and Traditional Approaches to Prevent the Conflict in the South of Kyrgyzstan’, supported by the German organization Bread for the World.

3 SHG Associations and 50 SHG members from the rural districts of Mady, Shark, and Kyzyl-Kyshtak of Kara-Suu district in Osh Oblast jointly organized a one-day environmental clean-up day. Each SHG Association allocated 1,000 soms for the event and 50 Self-Help Group members collected 100 soms each. A total of 8,000 soms were collected.

The money collected was used to buy 300 rubbish bags and 150 sacks. The participants of the campaign took an active part in cleaning 15 kilometres of roads and 6 kilometres of internal streets. The members of the group promised that they would continue to hold similar campaigns every six months.

The main goal of the campaign is to show sensitivity to the environment, to ensure the cleanliness of the village and to call the residents to harmony, unity and cleanliness by involving them in such events, and at the same time to be an example for others". - says Narynkul Duishenalieva, Project Coordinator for SHGs.
